If you've been watching the smoke news from up north, here's the latest. The wildfire in the White Mountain National Forest is 20% contained, officials announced Saturday, and crews are still identifying hot spots to keep it from spreading.

The fire began last Sunday and has spread to more than 850 acres. NHPR's weekly recap called it a historic wildfire that at one point spanned about 1,000 acres, and said crews hope to have it in control next week.

  • Location: about seven miles southeast of Gorham
  • Cause: likely human-caused, the U.S. Forest Service said
  • Closure: a section of the national forest is closed
  • Crews: working with special reinforcements and equipment
